Petra Matar is a multidisciplinary artist and creative professional living and working in Hamilton, Ontario. Petra grew up in Dubai, UAE, where she received a Bachelor of Architecture from The American University of Sharjah in 2011. Since moving to Hamilton in 2011, she has worked with dpai architecture inc. Petra is also a practicing artist and a member of the local art collective HAVN. Notable works include The Cocoon, an occupiable art installation featured in Super Crawl 2014, and Toward Anarchytecture 2015, a visual exploration of alternative architecture in familiar Hamilton Sites. Recent visual art exhibitions include a solo show at the Seedworks Gallery (Summer 2016), and a two-person show with Juliana LaChance (Fall 2016).

Self reflection has been a constant in my life, and over time I have known that to be a vehicle of my growth. My visual work very rarely explored who I am as a person directly, but rather was a reflection of my emotional states. After 30 years, I have enough “phases” of myself to reflect on in order to formulate a better understanding of who I am. Time is the best teacher; in its duration patterns manifest that can teach us about our motivations, fears, behaviours, shortcomings and ourselves. The show explores aspects of myself I have learnt to live with, love, hate, accept or (attempt to) change.
